Chardonnay Wines

From big, oak infused, buttery, yellow wines to more austere, crisper and cleaner styled wines, Chardonnay covers it all. Due to the grape’s resilience and hardiness, chardonnay can grow all over the world; it can be grown in cooler climates or warmer climates. It reaches its mineral-laced pinnacle in Burgundy, ripens to tropical richness in California and Australia, and takes very well to new oak.

In the 1980s and 1990s, chardonnay became Australia’s ‘golden child’. Just as society back then was all about excess, so too was chardonnay. The bigger the style and the oakier the better. This style of Chardonnay was so wildly popular that it earned an alter ego, “kardonnay’, in the Australian satirical comedy series, “Kath and Kim’. However, with the turning of the century, trends began to change (for some!) and the desire for excessively oaky chardonnays began to decline. Consumers became more interested in more elegant and subtle chardonnays…still somewhat oaky, but more finely integrated.

Chardonnay typically has a wider-bodied and rich citrus taste compared to other white wines. Cool climate Chardonnay can result in notes of green apples, green pears, citrus, and vegetable notes such as cucumber; white stone fruit and melon may also be present in moderate climates; tropical fruit notes such as peach, banana, pineapple, mango, and even fig can be found in warmer climate Chardonnay.

It picks up buttery aromas from malolactic fermentation, and toasty or vanilla scents from aging in new barrels.

A common choice for food pairing for chardonnay is fish or poultry. It can even stand up to red meat – depending on how it is cooked and what sauces and flavours accompany it. It’s a good variety with which to start on your white wine journey.
