Red Wines

The world of red wine, and where to begin? There are hundreds of varieties of red wine grapes planted in every corner of the globe! And every one of those corners produces varying styles and flavour profiles of red wine. Red wines can be bone dry, take Tempranillo and Chianti, for example. They can be dry, as are the Burgundy and Valpolicella varieties. A lot of Australian red wines could be classified as medium dry, such as Shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Then believe it or not, red wines can also be sweet and some even super sweet. Lambrusco falls into the sweet category of red wine whilst Port and tawny Port would be examples of a super sweet red wine.

Red wines are often considered richer and heavier in both style and taste than white wines. Because of this, red wines are often enjoyed during cool, winter months and in cooler climates. They go fantastically well with all types of food, given the right variety of red wine is paired with the appropriate food.

So, how do they get their glorious red, blueish, purple and crimson colours? It´s all in the grape skins! Red wines grapes ferment with their skins on. So although the juice inside the grape is white, the pigmentation of the grape skins, eventually bleeds into the juice. The length of time the juice spends on skins plays a significant role in determining the depth of the wine’s colour.  As does the grape’s skin colour- darker the skin colour, the darker the resulting juice. Skin colour is determined by variety and terroir, amongst other things. But that’s a whole other story!

Amongst the hundreds of red wine varieties available around the world today, some of the most popular include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Blended varieties are also hugely popular particularly French wines from Bordeaux. These days we are also seeing a significant upsurge in consumer interest for lighter style reds. These red wines, such as Grenache, Nebbiolo and Gamay are lighter in tannin and therefore not only easy to match with a vast array of dishes, but they are also easy to drink!
